After an uncomfortable fall while jumping for the ball in the air, Deago Bailey was spotted holding his head and was evaluated by the England medical staff, who declared him fine despite a procedure requiring that all head injuries be assessed (HIA).
The French referee Aurelie Groizeleau was applauded for the following protocol and overruling the England doctor – the player was refusing an HIA as well, but with heightened knowledge about head injuries, it was required.
England’s team member could be heard challenging the ref, saying “I’m a doctor… we’ve assessed him” with the referee adamant: “It’s the match doctor who decides the situation.”
“It undermines everything World Rugby are trying to do around head injuries and concussions.
“I’m glad the referee stood up to them!” Alan Quinlan and Jenny Murphy in full support of referee Aurelie Groizeleau after the HIA incident in Italy vs England in the Six Nations U20s.
